How And When To Exfoliate Your Face

There are many different opinions given when it comes down to exfoliating during each season. Some say a few times a week is sufficient and others say you can do it everyday. As a Medical Doctor I can say that often lies on what your skin type is and there are many factors that should be considered in addition.

First lets talk about why you should exfoliate. It is an important step to any skincare routine that polishes the skin to be smooth and glowing. It also aids your products like moisturizes and serums work more effectively by clearing up the dead skin and debris.

There are few different types of exfoliation you can use.

mechanical scrub (contains crushed seeds or nuts) is a common product used along with exfoliant brushes, and buff puffs.

chemical based scrub contains ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acid or beta hydroxy acid in addition to digestive enzymes that can be found in papaya.

Figuring out how sensitive your skin is the next step to help decide what sort of exfoliant to use. Those with oily skin should consider using a chemical based exfoliant such as the beta hydroxy acid to remove all the yuckyness from clogged pores. If you have sensitive skin try to keep the exfoliation to a minimum. Instead enjoy the humidity and moisture the summer provides.

One thing to keep in mind for the summer is that exfoliating increases sun sensitivity by 45% therefore we should be applying our sun protecting creams and wearing our big hats during the day to avoid discomfort.

Lastly I wanted to share an extra tip about exfoliating your feet! Sometimes callus can build up on the heels of feet and can put a damper when wearing sandals. A great at-home solution is to soak your feet in warm water and scrub off the dead skin with a pumice bar for smooth and pretty feet.

Thanks!
